Youth for Democracy: What does it take to be an active citizen?

The project Youth for Democracy: What does it take to be an active citizen? was implemented in partnership with Youth Consulting and Educational Center Association Târgu Mureş, Romania.

Target groups: highschool students and teachers in 3 counties in Romania
 
Project goals and objectives: to develop active citizenship skills in youth, such as community problem solving, civil rights decision making, change agency, cooperation and to raise their awareness on diversity and human rights applied to school community (classrooms or schools).
  • to increase high school students interest (15-17 years old students) in the human rights problems of their community (class and/or school), in the 3 high schools involved in the project.
  • to develop the ability to establish informal groups and associations that will support students efforts to understand and identify appropriate solutions for the human rights problems identified in their class and/or school.
  • to develop students active attitude and initiative in being involved in their class and/or school human rights problems and decision making capacity, as well as teachers ways of teaching.
  • to develop in students the ability to express and sustain an idea, to be persuasive and to communicate efficiently.
Types of activities: training, workshops for youth, youth campaigns; project website production.
 
Deliverables:
  • a barometer of human rights application was developed in 3 high schools from 3 different counties (Mures, Bistrita and Cluj) in the Center and North-West of the country, including a questionnaire answered by over 500 high school students.
  • 60 students from 3 high schools from 3 different counties (Mures, Bistrita and Cluj) in the Center and North-West of the country participated to training programs: human rights in high schools; project development; communication and teambuilding. 
  • The students used their knowledge and abilities in projects developed after training.
  • 40 teachers from the three high schools involved in the project were trained in human rights and certified in critical thinking abilities. 
  • At least 2 000 students, parents, members of youth NGOs, teachers were informed about the projects developed and the results of the project through presentations, open days and other events organized by each high school involved in this project.  
  • There is a web page of the project, with activities of the project, results and resources for students (information about what it means to be an active student for your community, how to develop your potential in order to sustain your ideas etc).
