Projects
Empowering Roma Teachers
The Empowering Roma Teachers project was implemented in partnership with the Resource Center for Roma Communities, CREDIS - Bucharest University and "Impreună" Agency for Community Development.
Donor: Roma Education Fund
Duration: 2005-7 (18 months)
Target groups: Romani language teachers, Roma ethnic teachers
Goal: improve the quality of education for Roma; professional development for Roma teachers.
Types of activities: training, mentoring, accreditation as trainers. The project trained 50 Romani language teachers, in Reading and Writing for Critical Thinking (RWCT). To ensure sustainability, out of the 50 trained Roma teachers, we selected 10 to become trainers, and further train at least 80 peers – creating a critical mass of Roma teachers using the RWCT methods. All trained teachers and trainers were invited to join the Romanian RWCT Association. The Roma trainers continued to act as trainers for other teachers within the in-service teacher training system carried out by at least 10 out of 42 County Teacher Training Houses (Casa Corpului Didactic) and the Resource Centres for Inclusive Education. Mentoring was also provided for the teachers in their schools – at least 2 mentoring visits per teacher.
Deliverables: 50 teachers trained. 10 trainers accredited, 80 teachers trained by newly accredited Roma trainers, Roma teachers included as members of the Romanian RWCT Association, guidebooks adapted and reprinted.
